Mercy Goode, and her identical twin sister, Felicity Goode, couldn’t be more different while also being each other’s other half. Mercy is bold and courageous while Felicity is timid and shy. I love Mercy and Felicity’s unique sisterhood and friendship. Felicity’s book, Tempting Fate, is next and I cannot wait to read it.
Mercy is an aspiring detective and when an acquaintance of hers is murdered, she is one of the first at the scene of the crime. Along with Raphael Sauvageau, mysterious and devilish co-leader, along with his disfigured brother, of the dangerous street gang. When they are arrested for the crime of the murder and brought the police station together, they form a tentative bond based on the intrigue they both have for each other.
“‘Though I put the man who next attempts to follow me.’ The sheer arrogance in his claim should have turned her off of him instantly. And yet, he said this with an odd sort of darkness. Like he pitied her next lover because he was already considering doing him violence.”
But Raphael’s future is dim; he wants to free his brother from the life of crime that they both have suffered and he wants to avenge his own sins. He never calculated how tempted he would be by the potential that a future with Mercy might hold.
“The darkness embraced him as a creature of its own. Blessed him with satirical beauty and fiendish grace. He was a demon in a bespoke suit.”
Raphael and Mercy are a sexy and dangerous match, as he is involved in major organized crime and she is the daughter of a Barron and the sister in law of the chief inspector of the police. But one night of passion proves that it will be very hard for the pair to stay away from each other.
The exciting final chapters of this book set up a very intriguing next book hopefully ultimately showing how a pair of loyal brothers and a set of devoted twins can both find happiness with each other and their loves.
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
