By Tessa Dare
Tessa Dare is a favorite historical romance author of mine because of the affinity I have for both her Spindle Cove and Castles Ever After series. However, with her latest series, Girl Meets Duke, I am finding the books to be more miss than hit. While I loved the first book in the Girl Meets Duke series, The Duchess Deal, I did not care for book number three, The Wallflower Wager. I was hesitant to pick up The Governess Game because I usually don’t go for romance novels with children. But I love Tessa Dare’s writing and I was eager to try this book before the fourth book in the series, The Bride Bet, comes out this year.
This book ended up featuring a least favorite hero. I just did not like Chase Reynaud – he was bordering on neglectful of his charges and seemed to need a governess himself. He was kind of depraved but needed to do a lot of growing up. I liked Alexandra but I thought she was too good for him and put in so much emotional labor (as well as actual labor). The lines between employer and employee were definitely blurred and while sometimes I can find that enticing, in this case I just felt like Alex was being taken advantage of.
